Polysomnography Treatment

Here you will get to know about the Disease and its Prevention from our Clinic Orange Sleep Apnea

Polysomnography, often known as a sleep study, is a comprehensive test for diagnosing sleep problems. During the study, polysomnography records your brain waves, the oxygen level in your blood, your heart rate and breathing, as well as your eye and leg movements.

Polysomnography can be performed in a hospital’s sleep disorders unit or at a sleep clinic. While polysomnography is usually done at night, it is sometimes done during the day to accommodate shift workers who sleep throughout the day.

Causes

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the muscles in the back of your throat relax too much for normal breathing to occur. These muscles support tissues such as the soft palate, the triangular portion of tissue hanging from the soft palate (uvula), the tonsils, and the tongue.

When you relax your muscles, your airway narrows or closes as you breathe in, causing you to have trouble breathing for 10 seconds or longer. This can cause a decrease in the amount of oxygen in your blood as well as a buildup of carbon dioxide.

Your brain detects the obstructed breathing and momentarily wakes you up so that you can reopen your airway. This awakening is frequently so quick that you forget about it.

How do you prepare?(Prevention)

It is possible that you will be recommended to avoid drinking or eating anything containing alcohol or caffeine in the afternoon and evening before your polysomnography. Caffeine and alcohol can disrupt your sleep patterns and exacerbate the symptoms of some sleep disorders.

It is not recommended to nap in the afternoon before a sleep study. Before your sleep study, you may be requested to bathe or shower. However, do not use lotions, creams, colognes, or makeup before the test because these may interfere with the use of the electrodes.

The equipment for a home sleep apnea test is provided to you or you can pick it up at your doctor’s office. You will be given instructions on how to operate the device. If you’re unsure about how the test or equipment works, ask questions.
