What is obstructive sleep apnea?
If you have obstructive sleep apnea, you make a lot of noise—snoring and gasping for breath—when you sleep. The noise keeps people around you awake, and prevents you from getting the restorative benefits of a good night’s sleep. If not treated, it can lead to other health problems, too.
Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by the obstruction of breathing by physical airway blockage in the throat. It occurs when the muscles in your throat relax while you sleep, causing your airway to narrow and block airflow. This makes the muscles in your upper airway contract, which opens up your airway again. When this happens repeatedly throughout the night, it disrupts the quality of your sleep and can cause fatigue during the day.
Once you’ve been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, treatment options include lifestyle changes like avoiding alcohol before bedtime or finding ways to reduce stress, as well as oral appliance therapy to help keep your airway open so that you can breathe freely at night. Surgery may also be an option for some patients to remove excess tissue or correct abnormalities in the jaw and mouth area that are contributing to your problem.
Surgery for obstructive sleep apnea typically involves two different procedures: the first is to remove excess tissue in the back of the throat, and the second is to tighten or pull forward certain muscles in the tongue. Neither of these surgical procedures have been shown to be particularly painful, but it doesn’t mean that they don’t hurt. The removal of excess tissue may hurt a bit more than the pulling of muscles, but both are typically minimally invasive and will not require much time for recovery.
Is surgery painful? Not necessarily. For most people, it’s uncomfortable rather than painful—but if you’re prone to anxiety or have a low pain threshold, you may find yourself worrying about what to expect. This may increase your anxiety before the procedure and even during it, which can make pain seem worse than what it actually is.
