Most sinus surgeries entail some amount of blood loss, but sometimes significant bleeding may occur. This is usually not a problem, but if acute bleeding occurs during the operation (a life-threatening event), the surgeon may need to stop the operation and place a drain in the nose before continuing.
Most operations also involve some amount of pain afterwards, especially in the first week or so after surgery. The pain should resolve itself as recovery continues, however.
How long is recovery from sinus surgery?
If you have had sinus surgery, it is important to know how long recovery will take. The following is a list of some of the more common questions about recovery time.
Do I need to stay in the hospital after my surgery? No, you will be able to go home in 1-2 days after your surgery with a prescription for pain medications.
How long before I can work or go back to school? You should be able to return to your normal activities within 1 week.
How long before I can drive again? You will probably be able to drive after 2 weeks. But this varies with each person depending on their job and the extent of their surgery. Most people feel normal in 3 months.
How long before I can exercise? You can begin exercising as soon as you feel well enough. Begin slowly, and gradually increase your activity level over the next few weeks until you are back to your normal routine.
How often will I need follow-up visits? Most doctors recommend three follow-up visits: at 2 weeks, 3 months, and 4-6 months after surgery. Some doctors recommend more visits if there are medical problems or healing problems.
Some people suffer from problems in their sinuses (the air-filled cavities around their nose) that lead to nasal obstruction, or difficulty breathing through the nose. These problems can sometimes be successfully treated with a type of medication called a nasal steroid spray, which reduces mucosal inflammation in the nose and therefore reduces nasal obstruction.
If medications don’t improve symptoms, surgery is often required. This surgery may involve straightening out the problem areas of the septum (this is called a septoplasty) or reducing the size of the turbinates (this is called a turbinoplasty). Surgery can help both with breathing through the nose and with the cosmetic appearance of the nose.
