Sleep Apnea surgery in kolkata
Determining the severity of sleep apnea is often a matter of clinical judgment and experience. If, for example, an individual is observed to be gasping for air or snoring loudly at night, the doctor may conclude that the breathing pauses are severe enough to warrant treatment. In practice, however, this may not always be true.
Alternatively, if an individual has been diagnosed with milder forms of sleep apnea but continues to experience poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness despite using CPAP or another appliance every night, a doctor may recommend surgical intervention. In some cases, it may also be indicated when the patient’s anatomy makes it difficult to use or wear a specific kind of device. A surgeon can remove excess tissue in the palate or uvula so that the tongue isn’t pushing against them to block airflow. He can also reposition the jawbone or remove bony spurs from the nasal passages to ensure that they remain open at all times during sleep. It’s possible that a particular kind of surgery could even eliminate obstructions within the throat and mouth entirely by moving them so far back that they’re no longer in the way.

What is the success rate of sleep apnea surgery?
Sleep apnea surgery is a serious undertaking, and the results can be life-changing. But what are the actual odds of success? A recent study published in BJBMS shows differing success rates for sleep apnea surgery depending on the type of surgery: 83% for patients who have uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UVPP), 16% for those who have tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy, and 50% for those who have pharyngoplasty. Risk factors for reoccurring apnea include being overweight or obese and having severe sleep apnea to begin with. In any case, patients may experience difficulty breathing, pain in the throat, swelling, soreness, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, tooth decay or loss, chipped teeth/broken dental work. Surgery isn’t easy—some patients will experience problems recovering from anesthesia or other post-operative complications that may require further treatment.

In considering whether or not to undergo sleep apnea surgery, it’s important to understand the risks involved. It can be a life-changing procedure that improves quality of life in many cases—just be sure you’re willing to put in the work to get there.

Is sleep apnea surgery painful?
As a patient who has undergone surgery for sleep apnea, I can tell you that it is not really painful, just uncomfortable. The surgery involves using a laser to create a passageway that allows the airway to be opened and widened. Even though the surgery is short, the recovery can take up to one week of pain. In my case, it was more uncomfortable than anything else. However, there are some hurtful parts of the process that should be mentioned.
The recovery process is less painful due to the swelling and bruising that occurs right after the surgery. Because of this, patients need to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least three weeks after they are released from the hospital. Also, they need to avoid any activity that can cause trauma to the throat area for two months. Although I took all precautions necessary and fully observed all of my doctors’ orders, I have not got a stiff neck and sore throat about ten days after the operation and not had trouble sleeping for about two weeks due to the pain in my throat.
