What is sleep study?
Sleep disorders are a serious problem for many people. If you have a sleep disorder, you might not be getting the rest you need to perform at your best. Chronic sleep problems can affect a person’s mood, their ability to focus, and even their physical health. According to the American Sleep Apnea Association, thirty million Americans suffer from some form of sleep disorder, and 90% of them aren’t getting treatment they need. If you’re suffering from a sleep disorder, or if you know someone who is, be sure to see your physician.
A sleep study is a test that records the activity of the body during sleep. There are five main types of sleep studies that use different methods to test for different sleep characteristics and disorders. The most common type of sleep study used is called a polysomnogram. This test can help detect movement disorders like restless leg syndrome and periodic leg movement disorder as well as sleep apnea (a breathing disorder where breathing stops temporarily during sleep), narcolepsy (a condition where a person uncontrollably falls asleep at inappropriate times), circadian rhythm disturbances (a feeling of extreme fatigue during the day), and other medical causes for poor quality sleep.
What are the signs that you need a sleep study?
If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve experienced at least a few of the signs of sleep apnea:
You can’t fall asleep. Insomnia is the inability to fall (or stay) asleep. If you’re tossing and turning or waking up often during the night, you may have insomnia.
You wake up often during the night. You could be waking up out of habit or because of poor sleep quality, but if you continue to wake up during the night and feel miserable in the morning, you may need to get tested for obstructive sleep apnea or just a simple sleep study.
You wake up gasping for air. If you’re breathing heavily or feel like you just ran a marathon in your dreams, it could be that your brain is calling out for more oxygen—and it’s not getting it. This means that more than likely, your airway is blocked when your muscles relax and gravity takes over as you sleep and cause a partial collapse of your upper airway. Breathing pauses are what are known as “apneas.”
